EdTech: 100 Tech Tools for Teachers and Students

131708640

This post is #12 in DailyTekk’s famous Top 100 series which explores the best startups, gadgets, apps, websites and services in a given category. Total items listed: 104. Time to compile: 8+ hours. Follow @DailyTekk on Twitter to make sure you don’t miss a week!

This post is quite a departure from last week’s subject: 100 Tools to Develop the Next Killer iOS or Android App. Our normal audience may not get much out of this week’s roundup but don’t worry, I’ll be back with something you can use next week! In the meantime I figured hey, there are over 7 million teachers in America alone* and that’s a pretty big audience who could potentially be looking for some cool tech tools. Not to mention administrators, parents and students themselves–that’s quite an ecosystem. What got me started on this subject in the first place was the fact that I kept seeing a post I did a while back called The 50+ Best Ways to Curate and Share Your Favorite Social Media and News Content being shared on Twitter with hashtags like #EdTech or #EduTech. As I dug deeper I realized there was a whole connected community out there interested in this type of stuff.

So here’s what I’ve got for all you educators our there: some random and cool EduTech tools, tech tools for teachers and students, ways to integrate mobile devices into the classroom, social learning tools, elearning and online learning resources and finally some test prep, textbook, educational gaming and a few other random resources. What you won’t find here are any lame attempts to pawn off something that’s not an education-specific tech tool as something marvelous and new like I’ve seen on a few other blogs (like Gmail or Skype–definitely useful, but come on, not education specific). The scope of this list covers everything from Kindergarten-age up through college-age so there’s hopefully something for everyone here.

Actually, this post has been a long time coming. While I’m not a teacher (no where close) I am part of a committee called TDEC which stands for the Technology and Distance Education Committee, a part of the nonprofit organization I work for, and have been involved with a distance education (via telepresence) initiative within that same organization. Not to mention my wife’s parents are both teachers, so education is something I run into a lot in my world.

I know there are tons of education technology resources out there so if I missed something good, maybe a favorite of yours or something that cropped up after I created this list, leave me a comment to let me know so I can get it added.

  6. Wow brilliant list, lots to have a long look at. What about Schoology (Great VLE) and Prezi (more presentation)

    1. Thanks for the awesome suggestions! Adding Schoology for sure. I’ll maybe do a post on presentations later on….

      1. Hi Chris,

If you want to write about presentation tools I can tell you that there’s a really cool one on it’s way called SlideIdea that focuses on interaction between speaker and audience through the use of mobile technology. SlideIdea will be released on Windows 8 platform in October and towards the end of the year on iOS and Android.

SlideIdea focus on Creating, Playing, Interacting and Sharing.

If you want to know more, please email me!

  7. I’m missing an awesome website on your list for online learning and eLearning: http://www.sofatutor.com, a coaching website for pupils and students. It offers about 6000 short and coherent videos, tests and a live-chat with teachers for revising lessons, learning at your own pace and fortifying your knowledge. It’s very effective!

  9. Check out http://www.zondle.com. It’s fantastic and getting better by the month. Games that teach … created by teachers for students or by students for each other. Perfect for revision and for homework tasks and suitable for most of the academic age range. Best of all…it’s free and always will be.

  10. This tool can go in several categories–My Big Campus! It’s a social learning platform with great LMS features, an incredibly large education resource library (links, docs, videos, wikis, etc.), blogs, EduTalk…. the list goes on and on. Most importantly, it’s a safe online learning environment made for education. It belongs on your list! :)

  11. Terrific list! I have friends and colleagues who either use these tools or are the brains behind them.

One other tool to add to your list… AcademicMerit
    http://academicmerit.com

AcademicMerit, based in Portland, Maine, is a developer of an award-winning suite of online professional-development, assessment, instruction, and learning solutions—solely focused on reading and writing in grades 6-12—that provides schools with a much-needed bridge from simply being informed about the Common Core State Standards to actually implementing them.

  12. Thanks for a great list of Ed-Tech resources!

I work in financial education and am using a badge-based learning platform to better engage high school students and young adults in learning to be money savvy.

You may like http://www.badgestack.com/ as well. It also supports community development and 21st century skills.

  13. This is a great list, and there are plenty of other fabulous suggestions in the comments. But I’d like to add SoftChalk (www.softchalk.com), which is content authoring software for K-12 and higher ed. It’s easy, mobile-friendly and works well with other tools (and LMS). Plus, they offer a repository for folks to share their SoftChalk lessons.

  14. A suggestion for your ‘Tools for Teachers’ (or ‘Random and Cool’?) list – QuizSlides – a brand new platform that enables very easy creation of online multiple-choice quizzes and exams that are automatically generated from PowerPoint slides: https://quizslides.com

It’s free for light use. (Disclosure: I’m the founder!)

  15. Wooow! What a complete list! Thanks for all this information. I’ve been doing some research and I found an app similar to Socrative, but it has more activities and in my opinion a nicer design :) it’s called Nearpod.

    Thanks for the data!

  16. What an amazing list of resources!! Great job!
    How about Nanoogo (www.nanoogo.com).

It’s a free online creative learning platform, and it includes a range of tools for teachers to enhance classroom experience. Check it out!
