Welcome to the newly refurbished DailyTekk (same great look, renovated content lineup). It is now January 2013 and DailyTekk is one year old! In that past, our guiding principle was this: curate cool and useful technology. Now we’ve got a new driving force: an insatiable curiosity for interesting technology. It’s not that we aren’t going to be curating the tech news, product and company launches, resources and tools as we have in the past, we will continue to do that in the future, but we’re refocusing on going a little bit deeper.
There are plenty of great tech sites that report on EVERY little tech development: TechCrunch, PandoDaily and VentureBeat among others for reporting on the world of tech startups, Mashable for social media news and lists, The Next Web, Ars Technica, Wired and All Things Digital for traditional style tech coverage. All that is just scratching the surface of the tech blogging/reporting world. There are review sites like Engadget and Gizmodo, there are scads of sites dedicated to Apple and Android products. All that and I haven’t even mentioned the other sites that make up the Say Media tech channel along with DailyTekk: ReadWrite, Techdirt, Android and Me, SplatF, Gear Patrol and now Techli. All that to say… where does DailyTekk fit in?
DailyTekk has been, and always will be (unless I ever sell it), a reflection of my own personal curiosities and interests about technology. I have roots as a designer and an IT Director, an entrepreneur and a nonprofit enthusiast. I love business, startups and big ideas. All of this experience has made me very opinionated and I will start expressing my views regularly via the Radar feature of the site. Essentially, Radar will function as an editorial column where I will give you my 2 cents worth… and will function as the main pillar of DailyTekk. I’ll try to post on Radar as often as possible. Sometimes that will be four times a day and sometimes it will be once a week–it will all depend on my schedule and mood.
The big addition to DailyTekk this year will be the addition of a bunch of great series featuring insights from very smart and talented people including journalists and freelance writers, executives and founders and experts and thought leaders from varying sectors. At the start of the year we’ve got 6 excellent new series for your delight in addition to a few staples you’ve already been exposed to. Here’s what the total series lineup looks like for the beginning of 2013:
Understanding: The Understanding series is a weekly four part series that aims to give you a deep and broad understanding of any given subject. DailyTekk will connect you with the experts you’d otherwise never have access to. Expect a wide and interesting assortment of topics from Instagram Marketing to Big Data to Robots and more.
Company X: This exciting series is going to take you inside the world’s most exciting technology companies from the point of view of an employee. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work for an “it” company like Twitter or Hulu? Wonder no more! Each week DailyTekk will expose the inner workings of a new technology company.
Product Y: There are cool tech products and then there are iconic products that redefine the essence of cool. It’s exactly those types of products that this series will bring you as close as possible to in the form of behind-the-scenes and making-of style insights from the people who made them. Get ready for some never-before-seen concept and prototype images (exclusives to DailyTekk).
Startup Stories: I’m fascinated with startups. I’m an entrepreneur at heart so I’m naturally inclined to dig into the genesis of successful and interesting technology startups. You’ll find out how your favorite tech startups came into being here.
Game of Fame: These days more and more people are gaming thanks to mobile phones and a refocus by the gaming industry to include casual gamers. Game of Fame is here to tell you what it took to make your favorite games a reality and where the original ideas game from in the first place. Oh ya–we’ve got plenty of never-before-seen concepts in store for you as well.
The Platform: Think of The Platform as TED style talks… typed. We ask thought leaders from different technology sectors to share their big ideas and innovations with us here. If you want to get smarter and wrap your head around new concepts, techniques and breakthroughs, this is the series for you.
Innovators: This series is not new to DailyTekk–in fact, it is the oldest series we have. Over the last year we have highlighted some amazing companies and people and this year we will expand on that list by adding ever more awesome people. Find out what drives success and get advice for your own startup.
Think Tank: This series asks burning questions to a group of technology heavy-hitters who give you their opinion to help you make up your own mind. Sometimes packed with useful advice and other times dishing hard-hitting commentary, you never want to miss a week of the Think Tank.
New this year as well is a focus on reviews and news. What kind of a tech blog would we be if we only commented on other people’s coverage? We’re a small team, so the news and reviews on our site will be less frequent than what you will find on other, larger, tech blogs but it will be no less useful or timely. As with everything on DailyTekk, we filter: that means we will only post about things we think are interesting. If we don’t cover something it will be because it is not worthy of our limited time and resources. Essentially that is a good thing because we cut down on the noise and give you only the good stuff.
So there you have it. That’s what you can expect from us in the new year. I can’t wait to grow our audience and resources so that we can continue to improve our offering. If you are a long-time reader of DailyTekk, what do you think about these changes? Is there anything else we can improve or any other ideas you have for us?
Thanks for reading and thanks for a great first year. I know we’ll have some exciting new announcement for you around this time next year! Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter for the latest updates @DailyTekk.
