Inside Path, the BMW of Social Networks (Pics)
Path, the social network born in the mobile era that caters to your close friends and family (like 150 connections or less), is on a roll. Last April, Path snagged a $250 million valuation and just recently passed the 2 million user mark. Dave Morin, Path’s CEO, recently said, “If Facebook is like a Chevy, we’re trying to be like a BMW.” So, if you were confused about how Path might fit into your life, that should give you a bit of a clue. This interview was just plain fun: Path’s take on social networking is perhaps my favorite, I like Star Wars, San Francisco is awesome and I loved Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. If you want that previous sentence to make more sense, continue reading what Leigh Lucas, Path’s Product Marketing Manager, has to say about life inside Path.
If I could describe the essence of Path’s culture in one word, it would be parea. Parea is a Greek word that means a group of friends who come together to share ideas, values and pursue a common goal.
My favorite part of the office is the view! It feels like the Bay Bridge belongs to us.
The day we released Path 2, November 29th, 2011, was my favorite day at Path. At that time, I got all tweets @path directly to my phone and I remember all of us laughing as it pretty much buzzed off the table. We all stayed at work late that night for a little celebration. It had been months of hard work and our users were excited about the new product and that was an amazing feeling.
We have some beautiful objects around the office – an old Polaroid, a 3D printer, an original Apple computer and iPod, and some beautiful books. My desk has always has a couple of these books on it.
The quintessential Path employee is design-oriented, in their 20s or 30s, and crazy passionate about our product. We have an inside joke around the office about “Sally Tacos” and “Joe Pather.” Those are the stand-in names we use for an average Path employee or Path user. It’s one of those jokes that got funny because we repeated it enough.
After we ship a new product we ring a big bell in the middle of the office. For a little fun we have game nights at the office, eat sushi at Umami, watch Star Wars, and bowl at Lucky Strike.
If you want to feel like an insider at Path, make sure you’ve watched Star Wars recently, it will help you keep up at the lunch table. But don’t worry, we’re a diverse crowd so you’ll fit right in!
