Adam Marchick is the co-founder and CEO of Kahuna, marketing automation for mobile.
One thing I am constantly focusing on is listening. A great leader is the best listener – he/she listens to customers, co-workers, investors and advisors.
As Joel Peterson (Chairman of Jet Blue) advised, ‘great leaders digest feedback.’
We make tweaks weekly, if not daily. It is all about listening to your market and customers.
Our company empowers mobile marketers to be great, and constantly evolve to further that goal.
It is not marketing, but has marketing benefits… We stand behind our promises. An example of this is we tell a customer how long it will take to install Kahuna. If it takes longer, we take their whole Engineering team out for drinks. That does not scale to 1,000 customers unless you believe in the promises you make.
In Silicon Valley, A+ engineering talent is critical. The best way we have attracted talent is my co-founder: Jacob Taylor. Engineers want to work for 10x developers, and Jacob is 100x+. He is a great technical mentor, and has been responsible for software that has served more than 10,000 customers (SugarCRM, e.phiphany).
Ha, you are asking for some of our secret sauce…
We believe in transparency, every Friday the business team presents a full pipeline review to our whole team. This really motivates our tech team to crank, because they know why we are doing what we are doing.
Sorry to be redundant, but it goes back to listening and trust. Karmaloop and Gyft told us how we could help, then we committed to helping them. I really give a lot of credit to Feng @ Karmaloop and Vinny @ Gyft to partner with Kahuna.
How we are scaling sales is part of our secret sauce… Kahuna is innovating on both sides of the fence: Engineering and Sales.
I still haven’t learned it, but I am trying to learn how to run a company and stay healthy. Steve Loughlin @ RelateIQ is great at this, and I am working on it.
Carnet Williams @ fi.tt is helping me with this now!
“Ask for money, and you get advice. Ask for advice, and you might get money. ”
We started Kahuna by interviewing the best growth marketers in the world on what they have built and what works. We went back and built our first version, then came back to them for more advice. When we showed them what we built, they all asked us to invest!
Having Tim Kendal, Raj De Datta, Chamath Palihapitiya and 10 other growth marketers involved in the business is a huge benefit for Kahuna.
Well… I was presenting Kahuna to a billionaire and he was giving great feedback. I really wanted to write it down and scrambled in my bag for paper… I didn’t have any.
BUT, I did have a parking ticket, so I started writing notes on it… Jacob was horrified 🙂
I now always carry a notebook.
