Looking for some part time work? Amazon may just have you covered. A new service called Amazon Flex offers anyone that is at least 21, has a car, an Android smartphone and can pass a background check the opportunity to get paid $18-25/hr delivering packages for the giant online retailer. The program is piloting in Seattle but will soon be available in New York, Baltimore, Miami, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Indianapolis, Atlanta and Portland. You’ll be able to choose delivery blocks of 2, 4 or 8 hours and will be delivering Amazon Prime Now packages (and other types of Amazon packages in the future).
Personally I’m not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand I think it’s a great way for people to earn some extra money with a legitimate part time job. On the other hand, as a person/business that receives a lot of packages, I’m not too excited about “regular” people delivering my packages. There’s something to be said about a professional delivery company like FedEx or UPS or DHL delivering your package. There’s a standard there and accountability. But who knows, maybe it will be a good thing all around — the gig-economy seems to be here permanently thanks to Uber.
