DIRECTV Should Cease to Exist; It’s Abysmal

directv_detail_fjnrI abhor DIRECTV. This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned that fact, either. Back in April of 2012 I wrote a post titled 3 Reasons DIRECTV is the Worst, Most Atrocious TV Service Ever. Given our history together, I wouldn’t exactly expect DIRECTV to go to any great lengths just to make a regular customer happy, but when you’ve got a tech blogger upset with you writing about how poor your service is, you’d think you would want to try to rectify things in hopes that said blogger would write something nicer about you next time around. I mean, there are plenty of companies out there who are starting to really pay attention to what is said about them through social channels and respond accordingly. DIRECTV does not appear to be one of those companies… I guess they simply don’t care.

Since the last time I was unhappy enough with DIRECTV to write an entire post warning the world against them, things have only gotten worse. All the same problems from my last post continue to persist, except now they happen more frequently and more severely. Lately, our DVR has gotten into the habit of not responding to the remote at all. They shouldn’t even call it a “remote control” because I can’t do any controlling whatsoever. This is a replacement remote that was sent to me after the last fiasco… which I have a feeling was refurbished (as it had loose parts rattling around inside when it arrived). I’m not kidding when I say that I couldn’t press a single button for 5 minutes… nothing happened, until everything happened. During those 5 minutes of trying to press buttons to get things working I hit the play, fast forward, pause and power buttons multiple times which all did nothing until all those functions started happening at once 5 minutes later.

Just this morning I couldn’t use the remote at all without resetting the DVR which reset the resolution and every other setting. So, instead of catching the news I got to wait while the dish and receiver rediscovered each other. This is a frequent occurrence now–for whatever reason, the “new” remote they sent doesn’t work with the receiver and the receiver acts like it is low, VERY low, on ram or something.

As I wrote in my last post about DIRECTV, if I make a selection (say I push up or down a few times), the action isn’t performed for 3 or 4 seconds–it’s maddening trying to select a channel or show to watch. With the delay, I may think I’m selecting NBC but end up changing the channel to ABC.

As if a broken product ecosystem wasn’t enough, I got an email recently saying they were going to raise prices. That crosses the line. I will be canceling DIRECTV shortly (I’ll be sure to post an update on how that goes).

Here’s the thing: if you sell someone a product, especially an expensive product that they must pay for monthly, it had better work and work well. With business practices this bad, DIRECTV is bordering on the unethical. This is nothing more than snake oil and guess what, I’m not buying it from here on out.

  • I canceled my service this morning.

    They tried to get me to stay but like you my remote did not work and they couldn’t even tell me how to make the unit work from the box.

    They offered me a 21 dollar/Month lower price If I stayed with them… Being I couldn’t get service and don’t care for square pants bob and all the other gum stuff I closed the account..

    You might want that lower price and put up with the problems..

    I don’t tell them anything as they pay some jerk that don’t seem to know his *** from a hole in the ground.. and couldn’t find it with a road map and flashlight.

    Please folks keep your mouth shut unless you get paid for it…

    If they can’t see the writing on the wall and you wanta tell them for free you are the sucker.
