Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s New Photos App In 1 Simple List

Hey, I’m Chris. I wrote this article and I’m also the founder and Editor of DailyTekk. Lets connect on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. Check back daily!

I don’t know about you, but I now take hundreds—if not thousands—of photos and videos every single month. And even more so now that my iPhone can take stop-motion videos (and to a lesser extent slo-mo’s). Organizing those photos using iPhoto was abysmal because iPhoto had become so outdated that is was slow and junky (in other words, clunky). The new Photos app is 100 times better than it’s predecessor. The interface is clean and it’s super easy to find the photos you are after. But if you’re not sure where to start or what you need to know, this list will get you off on the right foot.

  1. Photos is replacing iPhoto and Aperture on OS X.
  2. To get the new Photos app, just update to OS X 10.10.3.
  3. That means Photos is Apple’s main photo organization app for both consumers and professionals.
  4. Photos works with iCloud Photo Library.
  5. iCloud Photo Library will automatically make all your photos, videos, time-lapses and slow-mo’s appear on all your Apple devices.
  6. Changes you make to photos in the Photos app or on your iPhone, for instance, will appear everywhere else as well.
  7. Choosing “Optimize for Mac” in Preferences will take up less space on your computer by storing the original, high-res photos in iCloud…
  8. …but you can always download the original file anytime you want.
  9. You get 5GB of free iCloud storage, but you can upgrade up to 1TB.
  10. There is no longer a star rating system; it has been replaced by the heart/favorite button.
  11. Pictures can no longer be geo-tagged; but you can still see them on a map.
  12. There aren’t any movie editing tools within Photos; you have to do all of that through iMovie.
  13. Photos can import both JPG and Raw.
  14. There are three different ways to view your photos in Photos: moments, collections and years (which are all automatically organized for you).
  15. Photos comes with powerful editing tools like Enhance which lets you improve your photos in just 1 click.
  16. You can also make more advanced adjustments with the histogram, levels, vignette and other tools.
  17. Photos comes with built-in filters you can apply including: mono, tonal, noir, fade, chrome, process, transfer and instant.
  18. You can share your pictures and videos through multiple platforms from directly within Photos including: Mail, Messages, AirDrop, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and more.
  19. Photos lets you easily turn your pictures into keepsakes/gifts like books, cards or calendars.
