HidrateSpark smart water bottle review

Hey, I’m Chris. I wrote this article and I’m also the founder and Editor of DailyTekk. Lets connect on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. Check back daily!

The HidrateSpark is the first smart water bottle I’ve come across and the one I was lucky enough to test is one of the very first units to roll off the production line. I say lucky because the entire first shipment is completely sold out. Clearly there’s a market for this since product since it raised over $600,000 on Kickstarter.

Now obviously the whole point of this connected water bottle is to get you to drink more — or enough — water. It does this by pairing with your phone over Bluetooth, by tracking how much water you’re drinking and then by glowing and sending you reminders to to help you reach your goal.

It’ll hold 24 oz, it’s BPA free, it never needs to be charged and the battery lasts for an entire year, it’s dishwasher safe, it comes with a carrying strap and it fits in cupholders. Another cool feature? You basically can’t lose it as the app can show you it’s last known location on a map.

So how does it work and what’s it like to use? Well let’s start with the idea of motivation. Just having this water bottle motivated me to want to drink more water — just because I wanted to use it. And I found the reminders and notifications to be helpful as well — especially because they’ve got some personality; they’re often witty or funny and aren’t just another lame notification which I really appreciate. All said, I probably drank 10-20% more water than I usually would’ve with this water bottle around. Hey, I’m only human — I ignore notifications just like everyone else.

But the thing I really like about this water bottle is that it automatically keeps track of my water intake. I’ve tried several different water tracking apps and they all bog down with having to manually enter water amounts. Having everything happen automatically here is like magic and is super, super useful.

Speaking of apps, this app is really well designed. And it’s smarter than other water tracking apps I’ve seen. It calculates a goal for you based on personal health factors like sex, age and weight and it makes it easy to see how much water you have left to drink in the day to meet your goal. I really like the indicator that shows you where you should be so far. It’s also nice to be able to see a history of your water consumption to figure out patterns.

The design of this water bottle is pretty cool, but I can’t shake the fact that it seems a bit girly somehow. I don’t know if it’s the shape of the bottle or the fact that the website doesn’t show any dudes holding it or drinking from it, but maybe this review will mostly be for all you females out there. In any case, if you’re a guy there is a nice black color which looks a bit — ahem — tougher.

And speaking of toughness, I’m definitely impressed by the quality and durability of this water bottle. You can tell just by squeezing it that it’s a beast and is designed to last.

But if there’s one thing that could use a little improvement in the next iteration it would be the latch on the lid. It’s a really cool mechanism but it sometimes catches and takes an extra press to open. Not a big deal — just something to note.

So if you’re serious about drinking more water, I think this will absolutely be useful to you. But at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to your willpower more than anything. Still, I can’t think of any other solution that helps to get you moving in the right direction any better than the HidrateSpark. This is an awesome product and I’m excited to see what the team behind it comes up with next.
