Nirav Tolia is the Co-Founder and CEO of Nextdoor, a free and private social network for the neighborhood.
In my experience, leaders are most successful when they lead by example. I try to do that each day at Nextdoor.
We’ve recently created a new model for our operating roadmap that aligns the entire company’s goals and vision.
Plain and simple: we focus intensely on our members and the user experience.
It’s important to us that every single employee at the company uses Nextdoor and believes in it as a technology that can change lives. Unequivocally, that makes our team better every day.
We have a weekly all-hands every Monday morning to kick off the week, where our teams present the previous week’s accomplishments and their upcoming goals. This allows us to all be on the same page at the beginning of every week while also noting and applauding other teams’ accomplishments.
We literally curated our first neighborhoods by hand – obviously that was a much different approach than what we take now.
Every startup has highs and lows. What’s important is to recognize the extremes for what they are and stay as steady as possible.
We’ve had an internal PR team from the very beginning. We focused on building an agile PR team that could drive consistent growth and work with our members to find incredible stories to share with the media about how neighbors across the country use Nextdoor to stay connected and safe.
We agreed to appear on 20/20, a show that typically is about murder mysteries and scandals. That was a risk on our part, but it ultimately paid off. They ended up doing a profile on the neighborhood of the future, featuring Nextdoor as a virtual neighborhood watch.
