I’ve been waiting for, dreaming of, an app like Road Shamer for a very long time. It’s a simple way to report road rage and bad driving. It’s simple: download the app, create an account, snap photos or videos of bad drivers and driving (not while you’re driving, of course) and upload it for the wider world to see. You can use footage from a helmet cam (if you’re a motorcycle rider), a dash cam or your cell phone (preferably you are parked or have a passenger who can film or snap images in the last case).
Once media has been uploaded, the wider community can rate incidents on the A-Hole Scale and the Danger Scale. You can also search for license plates to see past offenses. And there are several categories incidents and infractions can fit into: illegal parking, distracted driving, road rage, traffic cheating, littering and many, many more.
Without even having had a chance to record an incident yet I can already declare that I LOVE the idea of this app. There are so many idiots out there doing stupid things; and they always seem to get away with it. Will I be using this app? Absolutely. And guess what? I think it would be a great way to monitor unsavory police activity as well.
Could something go wrong here? Potentially. People don’t like being filmed: it’s possible that using this app could further enflame an already dangerous road rage incident. And then there’s the possibility that someone could falsely report an infraction. Part of me doesn’t like the privacy implications here (I certainly wouldn’t want my license plate being shared across the Internet), but the part of me that wants justice doesn’t care enough not to use it anyway.
Putting road rage to good use? I never thought I’d see the day, but I’m glad it’s here.
